Yarn is sold mainly by weight in balls or skeins. This method does not give a very precise measurement for yardage as the actual length of yarn can vary depending upon the makeup of the yarn. The Craft Yarn Council is attempting to promote a standardized system for measurement. The most precise measurement currently used is the wrap method used my many weavers. It is simply taking the yarn and wrapping it around a ruler and counting the number of wraps that fit within the inch [wpi]. All measurements listed above are approximations and not exact, but will give you a general guideline for your yarn.
